May 18, 2007 – OUT: Minky Momo: The Bridge over Dreams (BoD)

Minky Momo “The Bridge over Dreams”
(Yume ni Kakeru Hashi, OVA, 1993)

This is our third multisub project following The Star of Cottonland (SoC), and by the way our 184th release.

Unlike SoC, which fans called a hidden gem, or amazingly rare gem of a movie, Minky Momo is already relatively well-known; we hope you will enjoy this release anyway.

The anime itself is quite high-quality, but the DVD was not authored so perfectly. As always, we did our best to cope with the problematic frames, manually one by one.

Unfortunately, we couldn't find any Spanish translators for this multisub. Also it would have been nice if we could add Korean, since Minky Momo is quite popular in Korea...

February 4, 2007 – Minky Momo

As our next (and the third) multisub project after The Star of Cottonland, we are starting to sub a Minky Momo OVA, Yume ni Kakeru Hashi or The Bridge over Dreams (38 mins, 1993). If you are interested in anime we are doing, and would like to add your language, please join #honobono @ irc.aniverse.com and talk to an op.

We would like to do Minky Momo TV Series (1st) in the near future if another group doesn't do it, but that will be after we finish Floral Magician Mary Bell (currently doing 39 and 40, and the last is 50, so about 10 to go). For now, we will just do one or two of the Minky Momo OVAs.

The bridge in the title. The visual is beautiful as you expect from OVA. From the beginning to the very end, all you see is basically this bridge. Everything happens on this bridge, and you will know what is going on in the world through the conversations of passers-by. This "theater-like" approach is one of Shudō's favorite tactics. The town looks a little like Sunny Bell.

The (apparent) heroine is the 2nd Minky Momo. To understand the exact context, you need to watch the TV series, but that's a different story for a different day (literally). You can enjoy this OVA separately anyway.

Kyōda Hisako, one of the most excellent seiyū, voiced this grandma. The beauty of this OVA owes much to her quiet but convincing voice.

In case you don't know, there are two Minky Momo TV series, sharing the same title Magical Princess Minky Momo (aka Fairy Princess Minky Momo), but not sharing the same heroine, that is, the first Minky Momo and the second Minky Momo are different girls (by different seiyū). The first Momo is the princess of Fenarynursa (usually spelt Fenarinarsa), the second Momo is the princess of Marinenursa (commonly spelt Marinenarsa, the same in katakana anyway). Unofficially, the first Momo is often called Sora Momo (lit. Sky Momo, as the magical kingdom is in the sky), Koyama Momo, or Shōwa Momo; while the second Momo is called Umi Momo (lit. Sea Momo, as the magical kingdom is in the sea), Hayashibara Momo, or Heisei Momo.

Another thing that could be confusing is: This OVA is not titled Magical Princess Minky Momo, but simply Minky Momo. More specifically, Minky Momo here is not a magical girl anymore. She doesn't use magic at all in this episode. OVAs are sometimes quite different from the TV series and this is such an OVA. Unlike the TV series, which was rather comical, this OVA is quiet and poetic.
